The Coach Works - 4 apartments – Southend on Sea, Essex
new build apartments for developer client
project value – £500,000

The project comprises of 4 new build apartments on the site of an old Victorian workshop that covered the whole site. The brief was to create a sustainable development using locally sourced materials to reduce embodied energies, rainwater harvesting to preserve water and with a no car policy due to the close proximity of southend Victoria station to reduce carbon emissions.

The existing yellow London stock brick warehouse walls were to be retained forming the new site boundary, the remainder of the bricks removed are to form part of the ground floor cladding for the ground floor timber frame. By reusing these stock bricks the energy used in their disposal is saved and the new building retains the original character and spirit of the Victorian workshop. The first floor timber frame is to be clad is renewable timber cladding that weathers by providing a tough natural, silver coating.
