The project involved the demolition of the existing substandard cricket club house to make way for new facilities in line with the modern cricket board requirements.
The England Cricket Board require individual cricket clubs to conform to minimum standards and the existing clubhouse was not able to meet these needs. The Brief was to replace the existing clubhouse with a large unit to accommodate changing facilities for both male and female cricketers, as well for the match officials. The building was designed with a mono-pitched roof which opened up towards the cricket pitch to focus views from the internal open area to the pitch outside. The highest position of the roof also creates a double height space allowing light to enter the club house and incorporates a balcony for use as a viewing platform.
Externally the building has been designed in response to the ongoing vandalism that occurs in the locality and the open green space surrounding the building. By creating a hard finish at lower level using a black brick the easily accessible parts of the building can be more robust from physical damage. In contrast to this the areas of the building which are not within reach can be softer and a douglas fir is used to break up the mass of the building. The roof of the building is sedum covered to help blend this building in with the green surroundings and also respond to the Clients request for a sustainable building. The three main materials used also reflect the club colours black, yellow and green; reflected in the black brick, blonde wood and green sedum roof.
